Wind Mitigation Inspections — How to Save on 30A Insurance
What a wind mitigation inspection is
A wind mitigation inspection (form OIR-B1-1802) is a state-standardized report documenting specific construction features that reduce hurricane damage. Florida law requires every insurer to apply the corresponding credits. The inspection itself costs $75–$150 and is valid for five years.
What inspectors look for
Seven categories: building code year, roof covering, roof deck attachment, roof-to-wall connection (clips, single wrap, double wrap), roof geometry (hip vs gable vs other), secondary water resistance, and opening protection (impact glass or shutters).
Where the biggest savings come from
The two largest credits are hip roof geometry and full opening protection (impact-rated windows and doors on every opening). Together these can account for 30–40% of total wind premium. Double-wrap roof-to-wall connections add another major credit on newer 30A construction.
Hip roof vs. gable roof
Hip roofs slope on all four sides and resist hurricane uplift better than gables. The credit is substantial — often $800–$1,500 per year on a typical 30A home. If your home has a hip roof and the credit is not on your policy, you are leaving money on the table.
